Scope & Content |
Poem by D.B. J. entitled, "A few lines on the Courthouse Election. . ."; mentions some of the key people involved, including Dr. Winn, H. Tolar, Owens and Smith, Munson and Ewing Transcription: 'A Few Lines on the Court House Election Now since the smoke of battle is oer' None hurt, but many very sore, Just brace up our good friends, The Result you will see is best in the end; You have much left for which to be proud, Your land is fertile and your great colored crowd, Can raise corn, cotton, and sweet sugar cane, Which products will bring much wealth and great gain, My friend Hinkle was sure on the job, I knew for t'was there I saw the crowd, And Mat in politics is sure no slouch, But before we left, he had quite a grouch, And Henry a good watchman was he, The Court House fence was the dead line, you see, Keep back boys said Henry as he went the rounds, This Court House stands on sacred grounds; Friend Brooks with his cheerful smile, helped us pass the day in very good style, as night drew nigh, the bad news came round, But Brooks was still smiling, through out and down; To the bright Dr. Winn and Harry Tolar too, Owens and Smith who live in the city on Mustang Slough, you juggled the figures a time or two, but Munson and Ewing were on the job, and showed you where you had slipped a cog; Now Listen Friends, I'll tell it straight, and the Court as usual I'm sure for you will wait, and your train will come in at nine-fifty-eight, and the Judge you can see and your business fix, and get started back by five-thirty-six, and believe me the Court House at Angleton will stay Just as sure as my name is D.B.J.' |
