Transcription: 2009.009c.0005 Velasco Dec. 11th 1894 My dear Daisy, I was so glad to receive tonight yours of the 10th which came quickly. I wonder why all of our letters do not make such good time, it seems almost impossible that a letter I wrote you on Saturday could receive an answer the following Tuesday. A letter from you to Teresa came last night. I read it as Teresa left yesterday for Cuero to attend the wedding - she expects to return Thursday. I was sorry to see in your letter to her that you stand in such dread of your examinations. Your Papa says tell you if you are frightened so, you will not do yourself justice and that you must take a calmer view of it. My advice is to study reasonably not so as to injure yourself at all and trust to God for the rest and I feel sure you will come out all right. What gain is it to you if you pass and become and invalid by studying yourself to death. I do not pg 2 mean to be misunderstood to advise you not to try to pass for I am equally as anxious as yourself that showed but I know that you are a hard student and if it is possible to do so by study you will succeed. But do not worry so about it - do your best and that is enough. Dr. Weisiger was at Austin such a short while and so very busy that he did not have time visit any one said he took supper once with Dr. Swearingen, other physicians are trying to oust him out of his office. Dr. Boyd it is said is using unfair means to do so. Got up a petition to have Dr. Weisiger put out and the two Joels thought they were doing something very smart and signed it. I told them both that I was ashamed of them- I was real angry that they did do it. I went to the train yesterday with Terese- your Papa would not leave me at home if I am feeling well and it is convenient - I hope to meet you at the train week after next on Monday I have made my fruit cakes and will make the others next week. I want you to have all you can eat. Mrs. Field came home with me yesterday and we have been working all day on a crayon pg 3 picture of Pa, have nearly finished it but it is not at all good. Will try another maybe this week. I could not find my drawing paper and had to use some Mr. Robbins had for maps which was not suitable. I cannot imagine where mine is, my last recollection was that it was on one of the wardrobe shelves in my room, was so sure of it being there that I never thought of it and when I was ready to begin my picture this morning I was at quite a loss what to do ransacked every nook and corner in vain cannot say whether you or Terese put it away. I laughingly told your Papa and Mrs. Field that I did not know when I had ever been in such an awful fix before, I had neither you or Teresa to ask where it was or to help me look for it. Mrs. Field had to return late this afternoon as she is assisting the dramatic club with their play which they are getting up for the benefit of the Harndel(?) Rifles I believe it is called. "Joe the Convict" Joel Bryan has the part of the lover. Mrs. Field says he was right timid about making love to the girl, he has to kneel to her and also pg 4 embrace her. She is new comer a Miss Wolfe of Chicago - She and her sister have a nice millinery establishment in Velasco. They have to rehearse every night it comes off Friday week. I believe I would like to attend but it is too inconvenient being at night. Am glad you visited the Bedells. I believe Lucy and Carrie are to spend Christmas as Washington City with Laura and Wally. Louella came home last Saturday to stay until after the holidays. Cassie feels very lonely since her family left she stays with Mrs. Norris. I told Cassie she must come down to see us some Saturdays. Mr. Frank Stevens says he will be Sunday School Superintendent after January. Has to be absent till then. Your Papa does not want it. Lottie was elected President of the Christian Endeavor Sunday, Cassie Vice President, Will Reese would not serve, no news yet of what the syndicate are doing- we hope to hear in a few days Papa joins me in love to you- write soon Your devoted mother Octavia L.
