Impromptu to Kate

I would I were some spirit blessed,
From yonder starry world,
Beside thee would my step find rest,
My wandering wing be furled.

I would not let one earthly ill,
One world care as now,
Come over thy heart thy smile to chill,
Or Cloud thy Kindly brow.

My Guardian wing before thine eye,
Untirring I would place,
To let temptations cup go by,
And sin's unblushing face.

And when Death's solemn call were given,
And life's vain dream were óer,
I'd clasp thy kindly hand in Heaven,
And Love thee evermore!
